A walk Through The National Mall

L’Enfant’s Grand Promenade

In the late 18th Century Pierre L’Enfant designed a grand promenade worthy of a new Nation. For various reasons, his vision wasn’t entirely fullfiled until the early 1900′s when his “Grand Avenue” finally took shape, albeit in a slightly differnt form.

L’Enfant original plan called for a mile long 400′ wide expanse along the center of the city that would allow for social harmony. Today, the National Mall represents much more than that. It’s a place where people play, work and where we honor our Nation’s history.
